Smartphones can be very different but we all want long battery life. With modern features such as dazzling displays, it can be hard to come by so sadly the days of charging once a week are long gone. However, there are a number of phones that can easily last day or even two.

Bad battery life on smartphones is something we’ve all grown to tolerate. While Apple’s iPhone is usually cited as a device that needs charging by lunchtime, it is not the only culprit.

And hey, we’re all probably just staring at our phone screens for too long. Phones - and therefore batteries - are pretty small!

That’s why at Tech Advisor we test the battery life of all the phones we review. Some phones are designed to have extra-long battery life by using large batteries and mid-range processors. But other popular high-end models are slim and battery hungry and leave some users frustrated.

You can of course charge during the day if it doesn’t bother you or even carry around a power bank to top up your phone. But if you don’t want to keep checking that percentage icon, then there are some phones that you should look to.

We review and test many phones. The below list are the ten phones that most recently have given the best battery performance.

Battery capacity explained

Battery capacity is measured in milliamp hours (mAh). The higher the mAh of a battery, the higher the technical capacity. But the phones with the highest mAh aren't always the phones with the best battery life.

It can depend on how efficient the processor is in conjunction with the software, as well as how much you actually use your phone. Expensive high-end phones often are faster and have better screens, but this will mean the battery life is normally shorter.

What to look out for

Phones with great looking QHD displays will drain battery life faster than phones with lower resolution displays. So you need to prioritise - if you want longer battery life, you might have to settle for a mid-range phone. Thankfully, this means your phone will cost you less.

Many phones today, but not all, have fast charging. Often cheaper mid-range phones have great battery life, but don't fast charge. Check before you buy to avoid disappointment.

What do the results show?

We use Geekbench 4’s battery test feature to get the time in minutes and seconds, but this is not an indication of how long the phone will actually last.

In all tests, the screen brightness is set to the same level to ensure a fair test (120cd/m2). The phone fully discharges its battery and the screen is set not to dim or turn off.

For example, if a phone lasts 8:15 in a test, it lasted 8 hours and 15 minutes with the screen on and the test processes running. This example is a very good ‘screen on time’ - and that phone will last a very long time in real world use, most likely over a day's use.

As well as the Geekbench test, we also confirm with real-world use that these phones had excellent battery life that lasts throughout a day of use and beyond. We have ranked them on the Geekbench result here.

The star scores here are the scores we gave the phone overall in the original review, not star rating scores for battery life alone. As we test more phones, we’ll update the chart.

Best battery phones 2020

1. Moto G7 Power

Moto G7 Power
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 14:02
Battery size: 5000mAh

It was always bound to have good battery life thanks to the big 5000mAh cell, but when it's powering a budget phone then this insane 14+ hours is possible.

It's even in the name and the point of the phone - the Power is built for exactly that, and will last most people a solid two, if not three days use.

It's underpowered and won't run high-end games or multitask very well, but if battery life is your primary smartphone concern then there are no better phones for you than this.

2. Xiaomi Mi Note 10

Xiaomi Mi Note 10
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 13:13
Battery size: 5260mAh

The Mi Note 10 is a great phone for many reasons and battery life is certainly one of them. This is one of the best results we've ever seen.

You'll also benefit from 30W wired charging which gets you to 80% in 40 minutes, and fully charged in just over an hour. Impressive stuff.

3. Vivo Nex 3

Vivo Nex 3
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 13:00
Battery size: 4500mAh

Lasting 13 hours in our battery test would be impressive from any phone, but from one powering a giant full-screen curved pOLED display and 5G modem at the same time it's genuinely remarkable.

With 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and a Snapdragon 855+ processor the Vivo Nex 3 doesn't skimp on specs at all, meaning there's some serious battery optimisation going on under the hood - but however it works, it means two-day battery life from a stunning, powerful flagship phone, which is nothing to be sniffed at.

4. Motorola One Zoom

Battery test score: 12:58
Battery size: 4000mAh

The name points out that the One Zoom is about the camera, but a highlight of this phone is the long battery life with almost 13 hours in our test.

You'll also get the benefit of quick charging as the included 18W adapter will allow you to charge the One Zoom to 23% in just 15 minutes. Pretty good for a cell of this size.

Battery test score: 12:56
Battery size: 6000mAh

You've got to want - and afford - a gaming phone like the ROG Phone 2 but it's a stunning device.

The mamoth 6000mAh battery lasts an incredibly long time and it also has more tricks up its sleeve including 30W charging - where we got 44% in 30 mins despite the size of the cell - and reverse charging so you can top up other devices when needed.

6. Oppo A9 2020

Oppo A9 2020
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 12:53
Battery size: 5000mAh

Despite being a budget phone, the Oppo A9 2020 manages to weigh in as one of the best phones when it comes to battery longevity.

The Oppo A9 2020 comes with 4GB RAM, 128 GB of internal storage, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor and a quad camera with a 48MP main lens, which comes with a very impressive night mode. There are a few niggles with the phone, but the massive battery life and low price make up for this.

7. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom

Battery test score: 12:32
Battery size: 4065mAh

Another Oppo with strong battery life is the Reno 10x Zoom, another phone where the headline is the camera. The time over over 12 and half hours isnt far off the A9 2020 despite being almost 20% smaller.

The phone also boasts a large 6.6in AMOLED screen, up to 12GB of RAM and, of course, that 10x hybrid zoom feature.

8. Fairphone 3

Fairphone 3

Battery test score: 12:27
Battery size: 3000mAh

It might only have a average sized battery but it's less demanding specs mean that it can keep going for a lot longer than a typical smartphone these days.

There's also something extrememly rare on offer here becuase the battery is removable and therefore replaceable with minimal hassle, just like the old days.

9. Samsung Galaxy A90 5G

Samsung Galaxy A90 5G
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 12:09
Battery size: 4500mAh

A 5G modem also didn't hold the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G back on its battery test, blasting past the 12 hour mark with the best battery life of any high-end Samsung phone - an area the Korean tech giant often struggles in, truth be told.

Elsewhere you get a Snapdragon 855 processor, massive 6.7in AMOLED screen, and divisive four-panel design. The triple lens camera is a bit of a letdown - real-world performance doesn't match the specs on paper - but that's the only thing really holding the A90 5G back.

10. Red Magic 3

Red Magic 3
  • Rating: ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings

Battery test score: 11:46
Battery size: 5000mAh

The Red Magic 3 is a great phone in many ways but battery life is a standout thanks to its huge 5000mAh cell.

This should get you though a full day with around 50% left unless you're doing a lot of gaming. It also features 27W charging, although you don't get an adapter that powerful in the box.
