Amazon Prime Video is a rival to Netflix, and like Netflix it lets you download select shows and movies to watch offline. This is perfect for watching videos on your commute or on a long flight, so here we show you how to download episodes and films from Prime Video.

The ability to download video content makes an Amazon Prime subscription all the more tempting as you also get music streaming thrown in (typically somewhere between £6/US$6 and £10/$10 per month elsewhere) and fast delivery when you order physical products from Amazon, as well as several other perks. You can find out more about Amazon Prime by clicking here.

You can choose between a subscription to Prime for £79/$119 per year or £7.99/$12.99 per month for the full roster of perks described above, or a subscription to Prime Video by itself for £5.99/$8.99 per month.

Explore those plans, their benefits and their free trials on Amazon's website here (or here if you're in the US).

Once you're signed up, you can get started with downloading videos from Amazon. To do so, you'll need to get the Amazon Prime Video app. It's free, and is available for both Android and iOS.

Once downloaded, you'll need to launch the app and log in with your Amazon details. You'll now see all of the TV shows and Movies available from Amazon.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the "included with your Prime membership" banner to ensure you won't be charged extra for watching, as there are lots of movies and TV shows available to rent in Amazon's library and not all of them are included in Prime.

Not every video is available to download, but it's easy to see which are. Click a show or movie you'd like to watch and look for the download button.

If the episode, series or film is available to download, you'll find the download button just below the green 'Watch Now' option on the right side of the screen.

You can also click the downwards arrow on individual episodes to start the download.

Tap the button to start the download. For TV shows you'll be asked whether you'd like to download the whole series or just one episode. It's also clever enough to offer the option to download only the episodes you've yet to watch.

You'll want to be connected to WiFi as this will use a fair bit of data. Downloading an episode or movie can take quite a while too, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

Once downloaded, you'll be able to find your movies and TV shows in the downloads section of the app. Use the tabs at the top of the downloads section to switch between your movies and your TV shows.

Simply press play to start watching, even if you're not connected to the internet.
