The drought of '76 Vs 2018

  Quickbeam 07:45 15 Jul 2018

I was looking back at the news for '76, the drought year that saw people queuing in the streets for water from standpipes.

In the above link it says, "Could it happen again? Britain has just experienced a drier winter than that which preceded the drought of 1976." Are they kidding? We've just has the wettest winter and spring that I can ever remember!

I reckon the dry weather up-and-down-the land has decimated the fields [ ie the number of runners] at 'turf' race meetings over the past couple of months. Also noticed on the telly yesterday at Newmarket that the grass on the July Course looked lush and healthy but the surrounding countryside looked parched and yellow because of the lack of rain.

You seem to have forgotten the Winter of 2013/14. I live in Somerset, I don't forget it!

But we probably have another few million houses that have been built since then and the population has probably grown by about 15 million.

So bound to use more water.

At the moment it is never as bad as 1976 but if it carries on much longer it could get worse.

On the plus side I haven't had to cut the lawn for 5 weeks now. It's as brown as can be, but that doesn't worry me as it'll be green again within 24 hours of when the rain falls again at the end of September :-)

A respite from lawn mowing is much appreciated in my house. There's a fair bit of it, and it is currently a fetching shade of beige.

As you say, green within a day when the rains come.
