Smartwatch Deals 2018

Smartwatches are the latest must-have gadget for techies everywhere. Part fashion accessory, part productivity aid and fitness device, a smartwatch can help you to look cool, be more efficient and feel great. If you are looking for a bargain smartwatch, here's what to look out for.

Smartwatches: what they are, what they do, why get one

Smartwatches are wrist watches that provide a quick-and-easy way to check and use your smartphone. Some come with a colourful touchscreen like that on your phone, others look more like traditional watches but have LEDs and buzz for notifications. The former type of 'full smartwatch' can do more, but its battery lasts only a day or two. And not everyone wants a computer on their arm.

As in the smartphone world, there are two main types of smartwatch that matter: Android, and those of Apple. Google's Android Wear is a version of the phone OS tweaked for wearables.

There are more Android Wear devices than there are Apple Watches, and Android does work with iOS but with cut down functionality. But unlike in the world of phones, there are further serious alternatives. Whatever phone you have you can use Pebble's range of devices, and Samsung has its own Tizen platform, too.

When choosing a smartwatch decide how much of your smartphone's functionalities you want it to perform. Then decide what you want it to look like on your wrist! This is as much about fashion as it is about tech.

Fitness fans will want to look for a device with a heart rate monitor and built-in GPS, although the heart rate monitors are often poor. Battery life, style, water resistance, and compatibility with a range of smartphones will be other key considerations.
